Scouting Report
The former Future Gamer and Southern Miss commit ended up on the losing end of a tough 1-0 ballgame, but that doesn't take away from how good he was for Catholic BR last Thursday night. It feels like everytime that we see Lawrence, we come back saying, "This is the best we've seen him", and the same can be said about last week. He was dialed in from the first pitch of the game and was in complete control. Lawrence did an excellent job of locating his 84-88 mph FB to both sides of the plate and was extremely effective at running his two-seamer in on the hands of LHH's. He flashed both a low-70's CB and mid-upper 70's SL for strikes and swing & miss, as well as a mid-upper 70's CH. It was a four-pitch mix for strikes, in any count, which led to him throwing 6 innings and giving up 0 ER with only 1 BB and 5 K's.
The former Future Gamer and Southern Miss commit got the start in our Week 1 Game of the Week against West Monroe, and turned in a brilliant outing for the Bears. Lawrence took a no-hitter into the 5th inning and ended up tossing 4 2/3 IP giving up 2 H and 1 ER with 2 BB and 4 K's. On a frigid cold night in North Louisiana, he sat 86-88 mph with his FB for the entirety of his outing, and the pitch flashed ride & run through the zone. He also was able to land and bury a mid-70's SL with sharp & late break, and didn't even have to use his CH, which has become a really good third offering. Lawrence also made two really nice plays to show off his athleticism. One was a comebacker that he started a double play on, and the other was a swinging bunt down the 3B line that he had to field, spin, and make an accurate throw to first base. What was most exciting on this night though was the command of his arsenal and the tempo, pace, & confidence that he pitched with. If he can continue to stack days together like last Thursday night, then the sky is the limit.
Lawrence was the second guy that we got to see last Friday, as he got the start against the Bucs JV squad and he showed that he's continuing to stay on the right trajectory. The southpaw graudally builds up during his delivery before using a loose arm stroke to release the ball from a high 3/4 slot. He did a good job of commanding his 82-84 mph FB and he showed the ability to land it to both sides of the plate. His 70-73 mph CB flashed "1-7" shape with good break and depth, and he was able to land it for strikes. When comparing his Future Games outing from last summer to his outing last Friday, it was easy to see the jumps and strides that he's made over the last 7-9 months, and with a 6'5" 170 lbs. long-limbed and projectable frame, there is likely still more to come.
