As the new year has come and gone, it's time to delve into the annual "Get to Know" segment. Each year prior to the season, we interview several of the state's top ranked seniors to get a look at the behind the scenes preparation for the spring. To keep us going, we sit down Rutgers commit and 2022 POY runner up, Zachary Konstantinovsky.

Get to Know: Zachary Konstantinovsky

Tell us about the decision-making process for your commitment? How excited are you to play there?
My decision to commit to Rutgers came down to the coaching staff. Coach Owens and his staff care about their players, care about making them better and most importantly care about winning. I wanted an environment where everyone around me wanted to win as much as I do and that’s what I felt Rutgers had.

If you were a baseball scout and just watched yourself play, what would that scouting report look like?

I think it would show I am a good teammate, picking up my teammates and helping them whenever I can to make them better which makes our team better as a whole. I think it would show a pitcher who commands all parts of the plate and is ready to compete day in and day out.

We are knee-deep into the off-season schedule. Tell us about your training, and spring preparation.

I have been lifting 3-4 times a week with conditioning mixed in. Getting bigger, stronger, faster and more explosive. I started my throwing program a couple days ago, looking to come out fast this year and defend our GMC title and make a run at the state tournament.

Name three goals for the upcoming season.

Keep developing and find a way to get better everyday, make the people around me better, and WIN!

Do you have any pregame superstitions?

Yes but if I told you they wouldn’t be superstitions anymore…

Who is the best player you have played against in your high school career so far? What makes that player so good?

I would have to say Mark Gialluisi. He was definitely one of the toughest at-bats I’ve had in my high school career. I was able to get him into 2 strike counts and he wouldn’t go down very easily. So definitely looking forward to more games against him this year

Who would you say your baseball role model is? Why?

Derek Jeter and Max Scherzer. I appreciate how much people respect Derek Jeter and love the fact that he had the same emotion no matter the situation. A moment never got too big for him and he always worked hard for what he wanted. As soon as Max Scherzer steps on the mound you can see he’s no one to mess with. Every pitch is thrown with intent and he is a competitor. The similarity between these two players is they have one goal in mind and that is to win.
