Scouting Staff

We're nearly halfway through the high school season in the Hoosier State. Check out the underclassmen (2026-2028) our staff saw during this weeks' coverage of the Hoosier State, with notes on players from all parts of the state - including some top performers from our Bullpen X Prep Baseball Indiana Series.

Check out our notes on some of the top prospects we saw during opening week, below, and a link to our Week #3 Player of the Week award - FOUND HERE.

By: Cooper Trinkle (Indiana Scouting Director)

Hudson Devaughan, RHP, Mooresville, 2026

+ Devaughan backed up the loudest 'pen at our All-State event this winter with a very positive first look in the spring. He went 6 innings and allowed just 2 earned with 3 walks and 2 hits, punching out 10. His bullying fastball came out at 94-95 T 97 in the first before settling at 92-95 for 6 and still grabbing 4s and 5s late. The fastball played with ride at the top of the zone and he also manipulated it to sink with occasional turbo 2's coming out. The delivery appears similiar to what we've seen of the past, but I do believe he is getting extended better this spring and the control has enhanced because of it. He flashed a couple real wipeouts in the low-80s throughout the night, with his best breaking balls playing with sharp glove-side depth. He will soften up on the pitch and get more sweep to land it, those generally playing more in the upper-70s. He showed a change on occasion but did not go to it all to often, a mid-80s offering with sink. His development continues to trend in the right direction and he's likely to be one of the premier prep draft follows in the area next spring.

Gannon Grant, RHP, Center Grove, 2026

+ I caught a start from Grant and walked away convicted of his upside as a starter after he threw a gem and held 91s and 92s into the fifth. He came out the gate at 94 on his first pitch of the night before settling at 90-93 in total. The fastball played with occasional arm side life, though the 79-81 SLV stood out most - playing with devastating late bite at times and he had very solid control of it. He used an 84-85 sinking change a handful of times and it is an above average to better offering as well. The operation is ultra-athletic and works up-tempo with a loose arm working to a a high 3/4 near OTT look. Overall, the ability to fill the zone at will with three pitches that he can get swing and miss with is what I value, and the Tennessee recruit still has room for strength in his 6-foot-2, 185 pound frame. Like Devaughan - Grant is another 26 arm from IN with a chance to be scouted heavily next spring.

Dylan Bowen, SS, Hanover Central, 2026

+ Bowen quietly walked into our Indiana Series and dominated the event, collecting (6) hits in two games including a pair of rocketed doubles. The Oklahoma State recruit is noticeably more physical this spring with the same dynamic feet we've grown accustomed to seeing from him. He still deploys the same hand-climb load that I've seen traditionally, but he starts from a lower handset now and the swing appears to be more connected from the jump in these early looks. There is growing power that has come with strength gains & it is loudening a really steady contact profile. He looked the part of an athlete at short & I saw a couple routine plays there from him, but the budding bat strength and hit-ability stood out most on this day.

Isaiah Snavely, SS, Fort Wayne Snider, 2027

+ Snavely is one of the more dynamic prospects in the state and I got a look on him against a below-average arm early in the spring. He showed an aggressive forward move and turned in electric barrel, punching once, but catching one out front for an off-the-wall triple that he actually did not get all of. He got it towards the cap - but pull-side elevated ball flight is really good to see from him, and the raw power shown here shows that his triple-digit showcase exits are in fact indicative of rapidly-evolving in-game juice. He showed a plus arm for the age across during I/O with athletic actions and easily projects to stay on the left-side for the long-term as of now.

Liam Delp, SS, Mooresville, 2027

+ I saw Delp across three looks in the last couple of weeks and he continues to cement himself amongst the premier prospects in the class. The wiry 5-foot-10 infielder has turned in dynamic run times for the class (4.22 swing, 3.8 drag) & already has 10 stolen bases in just 9 games this spring. I have seen him steal home not once, but twice, across these looks and the no-fear nature on the base-paths is game-changing. He's evolving into more impact this spring and hinted at future pull-side juice with a deep pull-side triple in Kokomo. The turbo feet are just as good on the dirt and his glove is another real tool. He plays forward very well with quality glove-to-hand and enough arm strength to stick at short long term.

Tyler Denny, OF, Mooresville, 2026

+ Denny is starting to really blossom physically and has added strength to his 5-foot-10 frame over the offseason. He's showing evolving gap power and an emerging speed/power profile with 13 SB and 5 XBH on the young spring. His strikeout rates are down, as well, and he showed the ability to hit next-level velocity in a look versus Perry that included a well-struck double versus a firm fastball. A 6.6 runner - Denny deploys a short, direct swing that he repeats well. He has the foot speed to stick in center and looks the part tracking out there, with average arm strength shown.

Trey Deckman, SS/RHP, Columbia City, 2026

Deckman is one of the more projectable uncommitted prospects I've seen this spring with an athletic, lean, 6-foot-3, 170 pound frame that has plenty of room to continue to evolve. He is high-waisted as can be and got the start at short in this look - showing athletic actions with plenty of arm strength across. Offensively, he sets up in a tall, athletic stance and hits from balance at heel-strike with a handsy, level swing. There is some hints of impact offensively that more strength will likely bring out. He brought a super interesting look to the bump to finish this game, sitting 85-87 and touching 88 with an athletic, natural delivery. He showed a low-70s breaking ball that is in the development stages - but I walk away bullish with projecting what he could be on the mound based upon the arm action, athleticism, and frame.

Ben Canada, SS, Guerin Catholic, 2027

+ I went in depth on Canada earlier in the spring, which can be found here, but I got another look on him and he continues to be one of my more bullish follows of the spring. I've seen him hit velo - and in this look I saw him lose a pair of homers to the pull-side. The emerging power is awesome to see (3 this spring) from the 6-foot-3 left-handed hitter and he's likely to develop even more with the projection to his frame.

Davis Moore, LHP, Zionsville, 2027

+ I saw Davis earlier this spring - and this look was even more positive as he showed quality stuff and feel to pitch in this one. He got hit around a bit in my first look with pitches left up in the zone, but the young southpaw appears to have grown from that - showing the ability to execute three pitches at will here. All three pitches can get swing and miss, 82-85 T 86 FB, 67-72 SL, 71-73 CH.

Jack Whaley, SS, Columbus North, 2028

+ Whaley was ultra impressive to me as a freshman stepping in against high-end velocity and getting off aggressive hacks. He caught a barrel amongst four competitive at-bats in my look. The bat speed is outstanding for the age and has helped him to three homers in the first 30 at-bats of his varsity career, along with 2 triples to show above average speed for the age. The 6-foot-3 right-handed hitter repeats a wide-stanced, simple swing. The offensive abilities lead the profile but the multi-sport athlete looks the part at short & throws very well for the age (86 mph).

Gunner Wade, LHP, Franklin Community, 2027

+ Wade offered a strike-throwers' look and the crafty lefty continues to trend steadily. The 6-foot-2 southpaw pitched at 80-83 with a three-pitch mix that included a low-70s CB that played w depth and a mid-70s sinking change that came out the hand with fastball intent. He carries the fastball with a full-circle arm getting behind an OTT slot at release and all three pitches tunnel well together. He is an above average athlete that still holds room to add strength.

Jack Nelson, RHP, Franklin Community, 2027

+  A lean, athletic 5-foot-10, 160-pounder with a compact, repeatable delivery & athleticism throughout, allowing him to pound the zone with a three-pitch mix. Nelson’s fastball sits 82–84 mph with carry through the zone, and he mixes a 71–73 mph breaking ball with sweep that plays well off the fastball - his best pitch on this day. He also flashes a mid-70s changeup with fade. The pitch mix, delivery, and strike-throwing ability are my biggest takeaways, and there’s more velocity coming. He’s been effective out of the ‘pen this spring and shows ingredients to trend up as he continues to fill out.

Matt Kulig, INF/RHP, Andrean HS, 2028

+  Freshman Matt Kulig is making an immediate impact for Andrean this spring. At 6-foot and 165 pounds, Kulig possesses a frame with ample room for physical development. He's shown a short, impactful stroke that likely grows into juice in a couple looks this spring and looks fundamental in the middle. I like the way the arm works & am eager to see it on the mound, but cracking the Andrean lineup as a frosh is solid praise & he's a big follow moving forward in the class.

Carsten Bland, MIF, Franklin Community, 2027

+  Bland continues to standout for Franklin Community & his game combines high baseball IQ with athleticism. Measuring 5-foot-10, 160 pounds, Bland possesses an 87 mph arm across the diamond, that he pairs w sure handed actions and quick feet, and at the dish he has a short, accurate swing. He's hitting over .400 to start the spring with his instictive natural continuing to lead towards production.

DJ Clymore, RHP, Perry Meridian, 2027

+ I was impressed with Clymore at Scout Day last fall and again in a relief look this week. He a lean, 5-foot-10, 150 pounder w an athletic, stretch-only delivery that he repeats well. He attacks with an 83-85 FB and his mid-70s slider flashes bite and got swing and miss in this look. He flashed a 78 change w heavy arm-side sink, as well. The repeatability and strike-throwing nature are encouraging and continued physical development could louden a sharp sinker/slider/change pitch-mix that play off each other.

Kooper Schmitt, RHP, Mooresville, 2027

+ Schmitt showed well in his start, throwing strikes an at above average clip for 6 strong innings to keep his team in the game. He is a stocky, strong, 6-foot, 205 pounder with an efficient delivery and compact arm action. His fastball worked at 84-85 T 86 early before settling at 82-84 for most of the outing. He cut & sank the fastball, while spinning a tight 79-81 slider at low-70s CB too. He shows feel to spin with his best fastballs playing with cut-ride and the breaking balls pairing off. He showed a change, as well, but the ability to spin it and throw strikes stood out to me most in this look.

By: Conner Madding (Indiana Area Scout & Director of Operations/Content)

Ty White, SS, 2028, Plainfield

White was awesome in my look, going 3 for 3 in the Plainfield 2-hole as a Freshman. He hammered a ball to a left-center for a double, singled through the middle of the field and went backside for another single. White sets up in a balanced, relaxed setup before a quick toe tap stride. The barrel works level through the hitting zone, more of a line drive approach. There is barrel feel and adjustability present for the stocky, 5-foot-9, 175 pounder. The freshman played SS for the Quakers, showing solid actions across the board. The arm works loose and quick from a low slot. The feet move well laterally and the hands are sure. I was encouraged to see White contributing as a freshman at the 4A level. The athleticism and gamer type attributes stood out most for me in this early season look.

Gavin Lykins, RHP, 2026, Plainfield

I saw Lykins in a start last week versus Whiteland. Lykins works from a stretch only delivery, lifts to a tall balance point before a shorter move down the slope, cross-fire landing. The arm works free and the ball jumps out from a H ¾ slot. He came out at 90-92 mph, touching 93 once in the first before settling in at 87-90 the rest of his outing. The heater played with sink mostly and flashed some ride. Lykins showed two breaking balls, a 74-76 mph slider with some sweep and a 71-72 mph curveball with more depth. He also flashed an upper 70s changeup, a pitch that is still developing at this time. Lykins was chased in his third inning of work due to some command issues, but the arm talent and ultra-projectable, 6-foot-5, 215 pound frame were easy to dream on for the uncommitted junior.

Lyrik Neal, RHP, 2026, Harrison

I caught Neal in a start versus crosstown rival McCutcheon and he provided a quality look. The athletic, 6-foot-3, 175 pounder holds upside with his projectable look. Neal provides a different look, attacking hitters from a low 3/4, deceptive slot. The arm works longer and quick with some funk to the whole operation. He lifts to an athletic balance point before a quick move down the slope. The fastball worked at 84-86 mph, touching 87 and played with sinking action. The righty showed a 74-77 slider that he showed solid feel for and it flashed late-bite. I also liked the 74-75 mph changeup with fade and sink. Neal went five strong innings of one run baseball, punching six and walking none. I liked the present stuff paired with solid command and I expect the velocity to continue to tick up for the uncommitted righty with plenty of room for strength gains.

Anthony Shields, RHP, 2026, Edgewood

Shields got the start on the bump versus Homestead. The 5-foot-9 160 pound righty has a quick and compact arm action that works to a H ¾ slot. The delivery is simple, lifting to a moderate balance point before an athletic move down the slope. Shields sat 84-86 mph throughout, touching 87 once early on. The fastball plays with carry and he commanded it at an above average clip in this look. He was confident in throwing a 78-80 mph fading changeup to both righties and lefties. The righty also showed some feel to spin a mid 70s breaking ball. Shields is a competitor with a history of filling the zone.

Connor Diehm, RHP, 2026, Homestead

I was interested to see Diehm in a game setting after he was showed well at our Fort-Wayne area Preseason ID in the winter. Diehm came on in relief for Homestead and got the 6-out save in a 4-0 win over Edgewood in my look. The arm works long to a ¾ slot with above average arm speed. The delivery is raw with some athleticism, he lifts to a tall balance point before a simple move down the mound, lands cross-fired. The fastball sat 82-85 mph, touching 86 and played with arm side run. He showed feel to land a soft, 69-71 mph breaking ball and was confident in throwing a mid 70s fading changeup. Diehm punched four in his outing, walking one and allowing two hits.

Shane Bardwell, OF, 2027, Homestead

Bardwell is an interesting sophomore outfielder that I followed in a Friday night matchup versus Cathedral. He is physical at 5-foot-11, 190 pounds and had a big 2-RBI double in his first at-bat in my look. Bardwell is a left-handed hitter who hits from a balanced stance before a bigger move forward. The hands launch from a low launch position and the swing works short and flicky with some impact. There is intriguing power/speed upside with Bardwell as he ran a 6.86 60 at our Preseason All-State event last month. He will continue to be a follow for our staff as we head near the summer.

Gray Stockwell, OF, 2026 Homestead

Stockwell has shown well across a multitude of my looks thus far this spring, hitting in the middle of the 9-1 Homestead lineup and playing CF. He stands at 6-foot-3, 195 pounds, athletic and strong presently with more room for strength. He hits from a wide setup, quiet hands in the load deliver the barrel on a slightly uphill plane with above average bat speed. Stockwell has sprayed liners to all fields in my looks, the arm is a solid tool from the OF and the run tool is above average (6.99) at this time.

Noah Lovelady, OF, 2027, Harrison

Lovelady was a big part of Harrison’s rivalry win over McCutcheon. The sophomore went 2 for 3 at the dish with a pull-side, three-run home run and a RBI double to the right center field gap. Lovelady is built with compact strength at 5-foot-9, 175 pounds. He hits from a balanced stance with a fluid hand load and short stride forward. The swing works short, he showed quality swing decisions throughout with gap-to-gap strength. A primary OF, Lovelady played 1B for the Raiders as he is playing through a leg injury. He is hitting .381 with seven extra-base-hits for the top ten ranked Harrison Raiders.

By: Kellan Northam (Area Scout - Southern Indiana)

Cam Gates, C, Bedford North Lawrence, 2027

+ Mature worker from the SO, controlled the game well behind the plate and was the clear voice on the field and in the dugout, good blocking ability with a decent arm with good accuracy, 2.12-.16 on throw downs, 1 runner CS in-game, handled a interesting slot and lots of dirt balls from the starter well, at the plate had a quiet night on paper but showed a quality swing, bat speed was a touch slow at times on heaters left in the zone, good plate discipline and feel for the zone.

Cutler Chastain, LHP, Bedford North Lawrence, 2027

+ Interesting LH arm that missed a ton of bats with high rise FB at 80-82 T84. Pounded the top of the zone and racked up 4 K’s in first two innings, ran into control issues in the second but limited damage, used a 74-76 CH diving away from RHH, slim frame that has potential for more velo with added size. Gave his lineup the chance to hang.

Luke Arnett, 1B, Bloomington South, 2026

Best bat in BS lineup, fills out the box and showed real pop, liked the swing from the left side and wasn’t pull happy, showed ability to drive the other way with a high EV liner over SS in first AB. Played a clean game at 1B and handled some shaky throws pretty well. Great size and strength, imposing and got pitched around in later ABs.

Jaylen Wells-Henderson, RHP, New Albany, 2027

Worked through initial command issues to shut the door in his second inning of work, with a clean frame was able to breeze through the top of the Floyd order, FB was high spin at 82-84 while jumping up for a 86, tossed one CH at 74 that wasn’t useful, big winner of the night was a 78- 79 SL that was tight and late break missing tons of bats, responsible for all 4 K’s in 1 2/3 IP.

Braylon Gray, CF, Jeffersonville, 2027

Lived on the bases with three backside singles, easy stroke with great bat to ball, barrel is flat through the zone and swing stays balanced, speed impacts the game on both sides by taking extra bases and covering a ton of ground in CF. Covers gap to gap and left his feet to make a run saving play early. One of the best talents in So. IN that has plenty of room to add muscle.

Carter Durbin, INF, Jeffersonville, 2028

Undersized sparkplug at the bottom of the lineup, was able to get his hands to a high heater mid-upper 80s for a single in his first AB, had good plate discipline throughout the night and ran the bases well, handled all the routine plays at 2B but nothing too notable. Has now cracked the starting lineup from the start of the year, interesting to see how much he can grow out of his 5’7 130 current frame.

Dillon Twiddy, 1B, Hanover Central, 2027

Projectable sophomore with a large frame that has some room for good weight, put together a couple good ABs in the middle of the order with not a ton to show for it. Interesting watch.

Jet Dutton, SS, Andrean, 2026

Showed off handsy swing and good bat to ball on a few occasions, great balance that consistently drove balls back up the middle, good runner that was able to apply pressure on the base paths.

Luke Gremelspacher, RHP, Guerin Catholic, 2026

Big bodied uncommitted arm that handled some command issues to put together a quality start, FB sat 84-86 but struggled to command, leaned heavily on a sweeper at 73-75, flashed a CH at 79 for swing and miss but wasn’t used often. Competitor that was able to wiggle out of traffic consistently.

Cal Lemmons, C, Morgan Township, 2027

skinnier frame that still produced some pop from the left side, pair of barrels including a go-ahead XBH to LCF, short stroke with bat speed producing some loud contact. Controlled the game well from behind the plate and showed quality block and recover ability, softer arm on the mound made controlling the run game difficult against a creative offense.

Clint Lemmons, SS, Morgan Township, 2027

Lean, athletic build that was a sparkplug at the top of the lineup, showed bat to ball by extending for a low liner late, easy path that played to strengths, played a great SS with plenty of arm talent, energy to feed off and leader in the field.

Noah Ladra, LHP, Morgan Township, 2028

Gutsy performance as a FR against a talented 4A lineup, FB only played in the upper 70s but was commanded well and attacked early and often, quality shaped breaking ball at 62-64. Controlled the run game well with a great LH move and back spin to 2B. Went 6 IP with countless weak contact only surrendering 1 ER in the outing and 3 total free bases. Competitor that was ready for the moment.
