Today, we put the spotlight on the number 89 ranked player in the 2026 class in SoCal '26 RHP Gavin Cervantes from St. John Bosco High School. Cervantes comes in with a smaller wiry athletic frame at 5'11 171 lbs. with plenty of room to add strength throughout his frame as he matures. Gavin cemented his spot on the Prep Baseball radar with an electric performance at the CA State Games which backed up a strong summer on the travel circuit as a member of the ZT Renegades travel program.
Cervantes flashed an intriguing 2-pitch arsenal that shows present power and quality with room to continue adding to as he matures. With a smooth lower effort operation that moves down the mound with easy athleticism and quickness to his arm speed which borders on becoming a fast arm which will bring additional velocity. Cervanted maintains direction in his delivery well with flashes off being able to block his lead leg. Attending the CA State Games to conclude his summer the performance that Cervantes put together was impressive and shows his potential. During his outing he worked off a FB that sat at 85-89 that has touched 90 on multiple pitches. He can really spin the FB withpin rates approaching 2600 RPMs at its peak with 2400 RPM range average. As well, there is ability to ride the FB above barrels, 24.8" of IVB at peak while averaging 18.3" of IVB. As good as the quality of Cervantes' FB shows he has feel for a solid SLD that works at 75-78 consistently while he ripped off a few in the 79-80 MPH range. The shape of his SLD can vary from a sharp tight offering in the upper 70's with nearly 2700 RPMs of spin to a sweeper version in the 2300 RPM range while generating 15" of horizontal movement. There is still some polish needed to his control of the strike zone and command of his pitches, but his floor looks to be a high leverage reliever, but if he continues to trend up his pitchability while adding a third pitch he does show some potential to profile as a starter in the future.
Cervantes is preparing for his JR. campaign at an emerging Trinity League power St. John Bosco program which looks to follow up on a CIF-SS D3 runner up season from 2024 with another strong season on the Southern California high school baseball scene, where he will look to compete for a prominent role on the Braves staff for 2025. His profile is trending upwards and Cervantes is a name to keep eyes on for the '26 class.
