Prep Baseball Georgia Scout Blog: Week 3
February 28, 2025
The Georgia Scout Blog will be a weekly blog with reports and videos from the players and teams that we go out to cover each week. The blog will remain for the length of the week with notes being added the day following from each game. At the end of the week we will update the POWER 25 and CLASSIFICATION RANKINGS, then at the beginning of the following week we will announce Player of the Week awards, along with our Diamond Notes, which is a culmination of all players that were not selected for player of the week.
Week of February 24th
Monday
Keon Johnson, SS, 2026, First Presbyterian Day
It was our first chance to see the 2024 Future Gamer since the summer, and the Vanderbilt continues to look the part of the the #1 in the 2026 class. Frame looks even more physical than it did in the summer while maintaining the plus athleticism. Infield actions are as smooth as you’ll find in the state with effortless lateral range and advanced footwork that consistently show up. Took one of the cleaner I/O rounds I’ve seen this spring and proceeded to make multiple plays in-game. Veterans didn't want to let Johnson beat them at the plate, issuing three intentional walks but the SS did see one pitch to hit and did not miss it on a pull-side laser down the LF line. Hand and bat speed are obvious with an innate feel for the barrel. The profile is as good as it gets in the 2026 class, especially at a premium position.
Brandon Mercer, SS/RHP, 2025, Veterans
A standout at Preseason All-State back in January, Mercer holds one of the loudest uncommitted toolsets in the class, and had it all on display on Monday night. Starting the game at SS, the RHH would pick up two hits on the nights, firing a pair of balls backside. Present bat speed with length in-zone and ability to spoil good pitching. Defensive actions are buoyed by a true plus arm with accuracy and lateral quickness to stick on the left-side. The two-way talent would also provide a potent look out of the bullpen as well, showing a strong FB/SL combo with swing-and-miss traits. Fastball has heavy life out of the hand at 89-92, touching 93 on one of the 4 K on the night. Slider holds tight, late break that creates good depth and misses barrels well at 77-79. There’s tools galore throughout the profile for mercer and will provide a big win late for a recruiting class.
Major Simmons, OF, 2026, First Presbyterian Day
It was my first look at the CF/QB1 for First Presbyterian Day, and the junior instantly looked the part on both sides of the ball. Picking up 3 hits on the night, Simmons stays extremely simple from the left-side with present ability to adjust in-zone and use of the whole field. Came through with one of the biggest swings of the night for the Vikings, going backside in the bottom of the 7th for a game-tying RBI 2B down the LF line. Hit tool is present and more than serviceable in CF, Simmons has a chance to be a key piece this spring.
Down one in extra innings, 2026 OF Major Simmons comes through with one of the best swings of the night.

Shortens up in the 2k count and fires this backside for the RBI 2B.
The @PB_Uncommitted OF picked up 3 hits on the night and really looks the part in center. #GAHS25 pic.twitter.com/ixgMgABHB6
