#3: Sterlington's Run to the Non-Select Division III State Title

Sterlington’s theme for the 2025 season—“Been Too Long”—captured a program hungry to reclaim its place atop Louisiana baseball. The Panthers hadn’t hoisted a state championship trophy since 2021, and with a 27–6 regular season and the No. 1 playoff seed, they entered the postseason determined to change that. But their path to the title would be anything but smooth.

After a commanding two-game sweep of St. James in the second round, Sterlington ran into its first true test in the quarterfinals against French Settlement. A 1–0 loss in Game 1 put the Panthers on the ropes, but they responded like champions—grinding out a 6–4 win in Game 2 before outslugging the Lions 12–8 in the decisive Game 3.

The semifinals brought another challenge in a talented Westlake squad. Sterlington took Game 1, stumbled in a tight 5–4 loss in Game 2, and then erupted offensively in the finale, cruising to a 12–2 victory to advance to the state championship series against No. 2 seed Erath.

The title series was every bit the heavyweight showdown it promised to be. In Game 1, the Panthers trailed 4–0 heading into the bottom of the seventh before mounting a stunning five-run rally to walk it off. Erath answered with a 7–6 win in Game 2, setting the stage for a winner-take-all Game 3.

With the score tied 1–1 in the fifth, junior Miller Sheets delivered the decisive blow—a clutch two-RBI single to right that gave Sterlington a 3–1 lead. The Panthers never looked back, securing a 5–3 victory and completing their mission of bringing home their first state championship since 2021.
