Q&A With South Dakota State Commit Callen Tomsyck
January 1, 2026
OF Callen Tomsyck (Muskego, 2026) was a key piece this spring for the ultra-talented Muskego squad, making an everyday impact in the middle of the lineup while also adding to a deep pitching staff. One of the top athletes in the state with twitch and burst that plays in game, the bat has steadily and continually ticked up throughout the year along with the ability to impact and drive the ball. Was one of the bigger winners during the Senior Future Games after collecting multiple hits with a home run included.
We recently had the chance to talk to Paxton about his recruitment process, along with some other fun topics, below.
Our Q&A
Prep Baseball: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career at?
Callen: I honestly really didn’t know what to expect out of the recruiting process. Everyone I had talked to about it had very different experiences. So I felt as if it was important have the mentality of the right opportunity will find me. The thing I was looking for most out of a program was them providing the correct resources to give me the best chance at playing this game the longest I can.
PB: What do you like most about the program you chose, and what were the key factors in making your decision?
C: Choosing South Dakota State was pretty easy to me. The facilities were awesome and they allow for the possibility of me taking my game to the next level. Most importantly, I felt as I was welcomed in by every coach on that coaching staff.
PB: What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?
C: Finding the right support system. Having a strong support system will make things 100% times easier as they believe in you, but most importantly, you have fun playing the game you love and that allows you to be at your best.
PB: Did location or distance from home play a factor in your decision?
C: Location or distance did not play a factor in my decision to play at the next level.
PB: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you? Where did the school you committed to first see you play?
C: The recruiting process really picked up for me following this past high school season. But the thing that took it to the next level was the Senior Future Games this past July.
PB: Was there a particular Prep Baseball tournament or showcase that helped accelerate your recruiting process? If yes, how so?
C: The Senior Future Games lived up to the hype and more. It allowed me to show my talent in both a showcase and games in front of a loaded crowd filled with college coaches.
PB: What other schools were on your short list before you made your final decision?
C: Not very many. Solid JUCO’s and a couple talks with other mid-majors.
PB: Who is the best player you have faced in your state? What about them makes for a tough opponent?
C: The toughest player I have faced was no doubt Peter Kussow. Not only is the fastball mid 90’s but the slider is one of the best in the country. Not a fun AB.
PB: If you could steal any tool or quality from another player in the state, what would it be and who would it be from?
C: I would steal the arm strength of Jace Mataczynski.
PB: Who is the next talented young player to keep an eye on out of your high school or travel program?
C: Cooper Wendt is a player every coach needs to keep an eye out for this upcoming year. It’s been fun to see his growth as a player over these past years.
PB: At what point in your career did you realize you were a college-caliber player and became serious about taking your game to the next level?
C: It came my Freshman Year. I really started to take things seriously in the Weight Room and saw all my tools take a sky rocket from that. It was from that I realized this is what a want to pursue at the next level.
PB: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?
C: Easily winning a state championship for Muskego this past year. There is no better feeling than seeing what your team had worked so hard for finnaly come to reality.
PB: Preview your high school team's season for us. How do you feel your team will be?
C: There is for sure high hopes this year for our team. The goal is no doubt a 2 peat, but taking it one step at a time is huge for making that happen.
