Q&A with State College of Florida Commit Paxton Schuh
January 6, 2026
LHP Paxton Schuh (Kaukauna, 2026) was a key piece last spring for the Ghosts used both as a starter and reliever and seeing multi inning action consistently. The strong and quick armed left-hander has upside stuff, the fastball has topped out in the upper-80s with more on the way and life out of the hand with feel to spin a sweeping breaking ball and developing changeup.
We recently had the chance to talk to Paxton about his recruitment process, along with some other fun topics, below.
Our Q&A
Prep Baseball: What were your expectations about the recruiting process? What were you looking for out of a college program to continue your baseball career at?
Paxton: I wanted to go to a school that would help me develop as a player and person. I also wanted to be around a winning culture, with teammates who always have each other's backs. I also wanted a school that was full of opportunities to get in front of pro scouts and top-tier college scouts.
PB: What do you like most about the program you chose, and what were the key factors in making your decision?
P: I like how they are personable to the player and really take time to develop each individual's skills. I think they have a huge winning culture there and they always compete at the top of juco competition. And again, I love the opportunities SCF will serve for me when I get on campus.
PB: What advice would you give to young baseball players striving to get where you are?
P: Take care of your body by having a good diet, staying hydrated, and having good exercise programs. Work hard and live in the moment. Baseball is a long process with so many ups and downs, so whatever you do, don't look away from your end goal, whatever it may be.
PB: Did location or distance from home play a factor in your decision?
P: No, I really just wanted to go where the opportunities were.
PB: When did the recruiting process really start to heat up for you? Where did the school you committed to first see you play?
P: It started to heat up after my first PBR Preseason showcase. I got posted hitting 90 with good secondaries, and college coaches liked what they saw. I received some phone calls after that and really got some schools looking at me. One of my Summer ball coaches, Connor Hults, helped me get on SCF's radar through film, so a huge thanks to him.
PB: Was there a particular Prep Baseball tournament or showcase that helped accelerate your recruiting process? If yes, how so?
P: Senior Future games. It got me in front of so many college coaches from all levels. I got multiple opportunities from that event, and it was great and a huge help to my recruitment. The preseason Wausau ID also helped out a ton because I performed really well and earned a post, which got me a ton of looks and basically started my recruitment process.
PB: What other schools were on your short list before you made your final decision?
P: Valparaiso, St. Louis, and Iowa Western.
PB: Who is the best player you have faced in your state? What about them makes for a tough opponent?
P: Jack Brenner. I've faced him in high school and during fall ball with GRB national, and he always puts up a good at-bat. If I make a mistake on the mound, he will capitalize, which makes him such a hard batter to face, knowing every pitch needs to be a good one. His ability to hit every part of the zone is also challenging because you can't really attack any weak spots. After all, he is a very balanced hitter.
PB: If you could steal any tool or quality from another player in the state, what would it be and who would it be from?
P: Brett Rybarczyk spin rates.
PB: Who is the next talented young player to keep an eye on out of your high school or travel program?
P: Oliver Lindstrom (Notre Dame HS)
PB: At what point in your career did you realize you were a college-caliber player and became serious about taking your game to the next level?
P: My sophomore year, after coming back from two ACL tears and a broken leg, I knew I was capable of becoming a college athlete. Overcoming those obstacles that early in my career really put some light into me and made me realize that everybody has their own path. It showed me that I can do anything if I stay focused and work hard.
PB: What is the most memorable moment in your baseball career to this point?
P: My most memorable moment was the game against Hortonville during my sophomore year, when I came into the game in the 8th inning and pitched 4 innings, allowing 1 run. I was not cleared to hit at the time because of my knee, but I had to hit because I needed to stay on the mound, which ended up getting me my first career varsity hit, getting a single in the 9th inning. We ended up winning that game in 13 innings.
PB: Preview your high school team's season for us. How do you feel your team will be?
P: I think we have a very good team this year. Our pitching is very good with players such as Myself, Bron Schaefer, and Carson Gates. We also have some very good hitters crossed the board, such as Quentin Gustman, Blake VandeLoo, and Ryker Donermeyer. Returning a lot of key contributors from last year, which is not only huge for the production side but for the team chemistry as well. We have a very good chance at competing for a conference title in the FVA, and hopefully, we can go deep into the playoffs and potentially take on the state.
