2025 KSHSAA Team Preview: Southwestern Heights Mustangs
February 21, 2025
The Kansas high school baseball season kicks off on Mar. 20, opening day for regular season action under KSHSAA regulations. Leading up to opening day, we’ll be publishing our team previews ahead of the 2025 spring season, touching on programs spanning all state classifications, counting down to the official Prep Baseball Kansas Preseason Power 25 Rankings.
Perennially, we’ve submitted a preseason questionnaire to high school head coaches across the entire state. Their responses have been flooding in and we’re using the detailed insight they’ve provided in our team-by-team preseason analysis.
Our 2025 preseason coverage continues today.
Head Coach: Lane Abert (7 years)
Classification: 3A
2024 Record (Finish): 7-13
2025 SEASON OUTLOOK
No. of Returning Position Players: 6
No. of Returning Pitchers: 5
Top Returners:
- 1B/LF/P Parker Leak (2025)
- L/L; A kid who loves the game and constantly works on perfecting his craft on the mound, in the field, and at the plate.
- OF/C/P Jason Banman (2025)
- R/L; Been a solid reliever for us the last few seasons and we are hoping to get more out of him as a starter this year.
- OF/SS/P Julius Trejo (2025)
- R/R; Has a lot of pop in his bat and can hit for a high average. He has a cannon for an arm. We've used him in a lot of positions with how good his arm and glove are, this year he will primarily be our SS.
- 3B Jaime Garcia (2025)
- R/R; He has primarily been our 3rd baseman and DH. We have used him some at 2nd base some as well. Has a lot of pop in his bat and can hit for a descent average as well. Really hard working kid who stays after practice pretty much every day to work on something.
- OF Wyatt Friessen (2025)
- L/L; Great, hard working kid. He has continued to get better every year. We are expecting some big things this year from him.
- C/OF Manny Mendoza (2027)
- R/R; We were short on catchers last year after a couple of injuries and Manny stepped right in as a freshman and had no problems making adjustments to the game and continued to get better behind the plate as the season went on. Should see continued growth from him behind the plate and batting this season.
Top Newcomers:
- UTL Jackson Stanfield (2026)
- R/R; Jackson was able to give some meaningful innings to help us out when we had some injuries last year. Looking for some big contributions this year.
- OF Drezden Zimmerman (2026)
- R/R; Didn't have quite the season he was hoping for last year because he was recovering from an injury. We are hoping he will be able to get back to full strength and be a big contributor this season.
- 1B/OF/P Memo Tellez (2026)
- R/R; Really stepped up late in the season last year for us and gave us a lot of meaningful innings on the mound. He also had to step in a play some OF and 1B for us towards the end of the season. He didn't shy away from the moment and had a big hit for us in our Regional game at Colby to keep us in the game.
Key Players Lost:
- Cade Thomas
- Aaron Cox
Coach’s Insight: “We are planning on relying on our senior depth this year. We have 5 seniors that have been starting since either their freshman or sophomore year. ” – Lane Abert, head coach
